Safety and Tips
- Always ride on the footpath and ride on the side closest to the road. This will give you more vision of vehicles backing out of driveways etc.
- Cross any streets at least 200 meters away from a corner or intersection (unless there is a controlled crossing near). This will give you more time to cross in case a fast vehicle comes around the corner.
- Never ride in the rain if possible. Mobility scooters have an on board computer and other electronics and if these get wet they may be expensive to repair.
- Always turn the key off before getting off (or on) the mobility scooter. If you accidently bump the throttle lever and the key is still on the mobility scooter may move causing you to fall.
- Never use the handlebars to hold shopping bags or your handbag. If they should accidently become entangled in the throttle lever the mobility scooter may suddenly accelerate or not stop.
- Always use the speed limit dial (or buttons) to limit the mobility scooter to your current speed, especially if you are in a tight area or among a lot of people. If you slip or get bumped the mobility scooter cannot suddenly accelerate if you have limited your speed.
- Never ride your mobility scooter if you have consumed alcohol, drugs or any ability affecting medication.
- Never exceed the weight capacity of your mobility scooter. Remember to take the weight of your shopping into consideration if your weight is close to the mobility scooters maximum weight carrying capacity.
- Always travel at the speed of those around you - it is an offence to travel at a speed which endangers others.
- Do not overload the key with too many tags or keys as this could damage the key socket, become entangled in the throttle lever or cause the mobility scooter to switch off suddenly.
- Be aware of your and your mobility scooters limitations (battery power, stamina, wind, sun, etc).
- Avoid broken glass or other sharp objects on the footpath - these could puncture your tires.
- Try to wear brightly coloured clothing when on your mobility scooter so you are more visible to others - a safety flag is a must.
- Have your mobility scooter serviced to the manufactures recommendations or at least once a year.
- Avoid busy times on roads and footpaths (eg. work and school start and finish times).
- Be alert - expect the unexpected. Watch especially for dogs and children - both can be unpredictable.
